Miguel Diez Blanco and Gijs Hillenius lead the recently created Open Source Programme Office (OSPO) in the European Commission. The EC-OSPO is the go-between for all activities outlined in the Commission’s 2021-2023 Open Source Strategy. The OSPO assists subject matter experts and promotes a working culture based on the principles of open source, while striking a balance between mostly internal and external activities.

The European Commission’s open source journey
The Open Source Programme Office (EC OSPO) of the European Commission will present progress made in the past two years.
We will show what has been done since the adoption in October 2020, of the reinvigorated Commission Open Source Software strategy: we will present the main milestones, which include the removal of legal and organisational barriers, and practical steps taken to move the Commission closer to a working culture based on the principles of open source.
In addition, participants will hear about:
– the FOSSEPS Pilot project on creating an applications catalogue of reusable open source government applications;
– the results of a study on finding and fixing Critical Software used in European Public Services; and
– our hackathons and bug bounties.
