User Interaction Challenges in Industrial Maintenance
Industrial maintenance is becoming more and more knowledge-intensive, and field workers use digital tools and solutions increasingly. In a typical work situation, maintenance technicians have their hands busy with tools and working equipment, and simultaneously they need to interact with mobile devices to access information. However, due to a sometimes harsh working environment, workers need to wear personal safety protection that limits the use of common interaction methods. For example, using a touch screen with greasy gloves does not work well.
Therefore, there is a need for alternative interaction methods, such as gestures and speech. Applying these in an industrial setting is, however, quite challenging due to the tough working environment and safety requirements.
In her presentation Sanni Siltanen will discuss these interaction challenges in industrial maintenance and share her insights into experimenting with different methods of interaction.
