JARI AHOLA VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland

ahola.jpgJari Ahola is the technology manager of Mobile and Embedded Solutions knowledge center at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. In addition to his R&D management activities, he is currently coordinating P2P-Next, a FP7 Integrated Project creating the next generation content delivery platform based on Peer-to-Peer (P2P) technology.

"P2P-Next: Next Generation Content Delivery Platform"

P2P-Next is a large European research project creating a new platform for content distribution based on the P2P paradigm. Enabling professional level distribution for broadcasters and independent content creators alike will change the future of content business the same way digital convergence changed the telecommunication world.

HENRI BERGIUS Nemein

bergius.jpgHenri Bergius is a former Viking based in the Nordic country of Finland. When he is not exploring the cave cities of Georgia or running with bulls in Pamplona, Bergie works on web services built on top of the Midgard toolkit. His company Nemein provides web solutions for several major companies in Finland and abroad.

After half decade of regular web development, Henri got involved with free software in 1999 when he coordinated the public release of the Midgard content management system. Since then he has been actively working on integrating standards like RSS and Microformats into the system and traveling the world advocating for interoperation between open source CMSs.

Henri's current passion is combining web services, mobile applications and socially produced geographical data together to build useful tools for travelers and mobile companies. To this end he is working on the GeoClue library that allows mobile Linux applications to easily become geo-aware.

When duties allow, Bergie escapes the crunch to explore the hills of Lapland or rides his classic motorcycle. He is also an amateur pilot.

"Attention profiling for smarter web services"

Information overload is becoming a major issue, and more sophisticated solutions will be needed to tackle it. Luckily there are tools for calculating newsworthiness of stories in order to present only relevant ones to a user.

After being able to calculate objective interestingness of various data items, the next phase is to make the filters more subjective, more personal. Attention profiling is a tool for this. There are already some attention-based services on the web that work quite well. For example, Amazon is able to make quite accurate book recommendations, and the concerts suggested by Last.fm have mostly been interesting. But so far this all has happened in closed silos.

APML is an emerging standard for syndicating attention profiling information between web services and applications. While not many services support it directly, there are some third-party tools for gathering the data from various sites.

We'll take a look on how attention data will be gathered and how it could be used for helping web-users to find the most interesting information.

Veikko Ikonen VTT Digital Life

ikonen.jpgVeikko Ikonen (M.A., Design Anthropologist) is working as a senior research scientist at VTT Digital Life, Tampere, Finland. Ikonen is leading the Human-Driven Design team. This research team is focusing on designing and evaluating mainly mobile and ubiquitous computing applications and services (also named as pervasive computing, ambient intelligence etc.). Ikonen's own research interest is related to the challenges of capturing user requirements in these application areas and developing suitable methods for the user experience studies in the area of smart environments and ambient intelligence.

"Experience on the move: human driven design of mobile and ambient services"
What are our design practises for on the move experience? Are there any special ethical issues that should be taken into account when designing mobile services and smart environments? Do we need new approach or methodology for the human driven design of our future everyday? These questions will be mused in this presentation. Some answers to these questions will be presented based on our recent project experiences. Other challenging issues of design will be discussed and new questions will be raised in situ with the audience.
