lietsala.jpgKatri Lietsala is creative director and co-founder of Gemilo Ltd. Last year her firm developed 24days which was the world's first Christmas calendar based on social media. This year Lietsala has been busy with the social shopping space and scheduling service called Waraamo which she plans to take global. She enjoys discussing challenges of the social media and the participatory economy. According to Katri, social media offers new business opportunities for those who realize that the acceptance of change in technology and tools is not enough, but one needs the flexibility and courage to meet the changes in organizational culture, too. After all - to be social one needs the other people.

HERKKO HIETANEN Turre Legal

hietanen.jpgHerkko Hietanen has been the CC-Finland leader since 2004. He has worked with the Creative Commons team in San Francisco and as a visiting scholar at UC Berkley School of Information.

Herkko is also a partner in Turre Legal law firm and has extensively worked with user created and open content projects. Herkko has counseled several media companies and productions in open content licensing.

Currently Herkko teaches law and technology at Lappeenranta University of Technology and conducts p2p research at Helsinki Institute for Information Technology with the p2p fusion project. His publications include several academic papers and books. Herkko will defend his PhD dissertation on Creative Commons -licensing in the coming fall.

While the web 2.0 technologies enable co-operation and creation services
copyright law is often blocking the new services. Open licenses provide a
way to foster collaboration and co-operation that is the key features of the
most successful services. Getting the copyright issues rights from the
beginning provides a substantial competitive advantage to any web 2.0
Internet service. This presentation gives you an idea of the legal aspects
that should be taken into account when building collaborative services.

MARKO TURPEINEN The Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT

turpeinen.jpgProfessor Marko Turpeinen holds a chair in Media Technology at The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), where he also leads the Social Media research group. He is also the Principal Scientist of the Network Society research programme and the leader of the Digital Content Communities research group at Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT). He has a Ph.D. Degree in Computer Science from Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) and a M.Sc. Degree in Media Arts and Sciences from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His academic research addresses issues in customized media content, active computer-mediated communities, ageing society, and the role of media in promoting sustainable development. He has also extensive industrial experience from the media industry, as between 1996 and 2005 he worked in various executive positions at Alma Media Corporation, a Finnish media company.

The growth of social media has been phenomenal in the 2000s. More and more people are taking the role of active participant and media producer. The tools and platforms have evolved rapidly enabling, for example, open and collective media creation. How do these developments relate to the overall trends in media use? How do they impact the media industry? What are the main societal effects? What should happen next?

SIMONE BRUNOZZI
Amazon

brunozzi.jpgSimone Brunozzi is a technology enthusiast, involved in IT and computing since an early age. He joined Amazon in may 2008 in the role of Web Services Evangelist, traveling across Europe and vicinity to showcase the innovative new solutions by Amazon Web Services and help developers build businesses and applications.

Of Italian origins, Simone loves travelling, meeting people and connecting with them. He is a Linux and Ubuntu passionate, loves blogging on www.brunozzi.com, and has interests in the environment, clean energies, and technology in general.

Prior to joining Amazon, Simone had his own business focusing on web applications. He also served as a professor of Programming Languages and Compilers at Perugia University and worked as a network and system administrator at the University for Foreigners in Perugia. Simone has a Computer Science degree and spent six months at UC Irvine, California, where he studied the American approach to business. He gained early programming experience at the Ministry of Aerial Defense in Rome, Italy.
