Pierre A. Damas is Head of Sector of Digital Services at the General Directorate for IT (DIGIT) of the European Commission. He is responsible for projects and services touching Identity and Access Management, such as EC’s authentication system ECAS, CEF eID and eSignature. He is also responsible for the Open Sourcve Strategy of the Commission as well as the European Parliament pilot project on auditing of free and Open Source software.
The European Commission has updated its strategy for internal use of Open Source Software. The Commission, which is already using open source for many of its key ICT services and software solutions, will further increase the role of this type of software internally. The renewed strategy puts a special emphasis on procurement, contribution to open source software projects and providing more of the software developed within the Commission as open source. What are the objectives of the Commission and in what that strategy helps achieving these objectives?
