Apps4Finland

What

Apps4Finland comes again! After last year's good debut, then with the name Apps4Democracy Finland, we are back with the round two. And yes, MindTrek will host the award ceremony on the 7th of October as well as a meeting for the participants and people interested in Apps4Finland.

Apps4Finland is a competition where you can compete with ideas and functional web applications, widgets, mashups, iPhone apps, Facebook apps, and other digital utilities that, make use of some public data and thus facilitate the collaboration between citizens and public organizations.

Apps4Finland has three gategories: two for implementations: one for independent developers and another one for companies and other organizations. Third gategory is the idea gategory.

We encourage everybody to participate. No idea or application is too small or too big for this competition. We want to embrace the emergence of new ideas and collaboration that make the Finland a better place for everyone. That's why Apps4Finland.

How to Enter

To enter, simply produce your functional demonstration and submit it. If you have a great idea, but feel that you lack the skills to execute your vision, you can still participate in the idea category of the competition and/or join forces with someone technically talented in order to participate in the Implementation category. The awards of different categories and all other relevant information will be available on this website.

TIMETABLE

  • 14th of April 2010 Launch of the competition: Detailed rules, awards, partners and the first data set are published
  • 25th of May pre-registration for the competition will open at apps4finland.fi
  • 15th of May Datacatalog will be published and the Jury confirmed -> Sorry, we're running a bit late on this.
  • 15th of July, the submission will open (requires pre-registration)
  • 1st of August People's Choise voting period starts.
  • 31st of August 2010 at 14:00 (+2 GMT) Final submission deadline for all entries
  • 30th of September 2010 at 14:00 (+2 GMT) People's Choice voting period ends
  • 7th of October 2010 Awards ceremony in MindTrek Conference, Tampere

Possibly we will have workshops based on specific data sources and we will inform about those through these pages, Facebook and Twitter.

How

The immaterial property rights related to the competition works remain the property of the author. The organizers encourage all entrants to share their work under a flexible and permissive licence (such as the GPL and Creative Commons) in order that others may build upon what they have done.

AWARDS

There are several awards in the Apps for Finland 2010 -competition. The total award sum of 13 000 € is divided between the idea and Implementation categories and the Honorable Mention awards. The prizes in the implementation category are further segmented to Indie (independent developers) and Agencies (companies and institutions). Awards may not be awarded if the award criteria set by the jury are not fulfilled.

ORGANIZERS

The Apps4Finland -contest is a category of the 2010 MindTrek competition. The main organizer of the category is the Finnish Internet Democracy Association (Suomen Verkkodemokratiaseura ry.). Other institutions present in the organizers are MindTrek and Forum Virium Helsinki. The contest partners (list will be published 15.5.2010) offer financial and other support for the organizers. Patron of the competition is Risto Siilasmaa.

The organizers, partners or patron will not be held responsible if due to a case of force majeure or unexpected event, this competition has to be cancelled, postponed or modified in any way. These conditions include a lack of financing for the event and an insufficient number of projects entered.
