Team Signbook: Who are you and what does your App?
We are 3rd year Information Technology students from the Turku University of Applied Sciences. Members of Team Signbook are: Tomi Härkönen, Kimmo Koski, Petteri Lehtonen and Johannes Maliranta. We participated in Imagine Cup 2010 Finnish semifinals with the Signbook application. The challenge it solves originates from the sign language interpreter students at Diak: they needed an application that eases and boosts the studying of sign language. Signbook is basically an open bank for sign language terms.

"Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a lucky sixpence in her shoe?" is the title of the keynote speech by Mr Lauri Kivinen, the new CEO of YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company).

Before moving to Yle Lauri was the Head of Corporate Affairs at Nokia Siemens Networks. He held various senior roles within the Nokia Group, which he joined in 1988.

Lauri was appointed Vice-President of Communications at Nokia Mobile Phones in 1992, before moving to the position of Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications at Nokia Group. His last position at Nokia before joining Nokia Siemens Networks was Head of Nokia’s EU Representative Office based in Brussels.

Ari Jaaksi has been involved in the mobile communications industry for more than 15 years and is currently Vice President, MeeGo Devices, for Nokia. In this role, Ari Jaaksi is responsible for the strategy and implementation of Nokia’s mobile Linux and open source based products, and software platforms. He heads the development of Nokia’s Linux-based devices, software and Nokia’s open source developer operations on www.maemo.org.

Outi Aho will present her artwork Robots don’t cry? in the Social Machines track on Friday Oct 8th. The artwork addresses relationships between human, technology, and emotions.

The idea of emotional robots was born when she started out asking herself: Can machines be affective and responsive in social and emotional situations? Can robots cry? The artwork is her personal and tentative response to these questions. The artwork consists of slowly moving and singing robot balls. MindTrek 2010 is pleased to welcome Kai Lemmetty to the stage, who will share his experience about falling off the camel and getting right back on it again!

Kai Lemmetty is the co-founder of GigsWiz, a small startup based in Helsinki, Finland. Before GigsWiz Kai was the co-founder of Floobs (2007-2010). Floobs was developing a video streaming platform for the sports and music industry focusing especially on live video streaming. Floobs filed for bankruptcy in January 2010.

He will talk about how it went with Floobs, how to embrace failure and the learning experience related to it.
